Making Places Inbetween. Art Exhibition
17–25 September 2026
Book Launch + Vernissage: 17 September, 18:00
Bardo Projektraum, Jessnerstraße 33, 10247 Berlin
What happens when a book leaves the page and becomes a space to inhabit?
Making Places Inbetween is an exhibition-as-book in which chapters are transformed into collaborative, multi-vocal artworks. Moving between Italy, France and Chile, the project brings together narratives of placemaking shaped by migration, border regimes, memory and resistance.
Developed from a book project by artist and researcher Melanie Garland, the exhibition approaches migration not as a series of isolated movements, but as a constellation of interconnected experiences. Inspired by the oceans connecting the different sites explored in the project, Making Places Inbetween proposes an archipelagic perspective: stories, encounters and forms of solidarity emerge across geographical borders, linking communities and places through water, memory and movement.
At the intersection of art and anthropology, theory and practice, the project also asks how migration can be researched and represented without reducing complex experiences to fixed narratives. Through sound and art installations, photography, collective listening, workshops and artistic activations, the book expands into the physical space of Bardo Projektraum.
Rather than presenting research as something finished, Making Places Inbetween creates a space for encounter and exchange. Visitors are invited to move between stories and methodologies, and to consider how places are created, inhabited and transformed by communities on the move.
The project features conversations with Elizabeth Andrade, Adolfo Estalella, Davide Franceschini, Inti Gallardo, Melanie Garland, hn. lyonga, Carla J. Maier, Cristian Ochoa, Kathy O’Hare and Myriam Perrot.
